Have you ever wanted to dive into blogging, but had absolutely NO clue how to do it?
That was me about 10 years ago. I started off slowly by using the free blog sites. It worked for a short period of time until I realized that I wasn’t going to grow my website with such restrictions hanging over my head. You see, by using the free platforms I ran the risk of the parent company shutting down their program or my page at any time because technically, they owned ALL of my content! It wasn’t until I began to form a readership that I decided to make the next big step into self-hosting.

I naively signed up to a hosting company that became a NIGHTMARE! For about three years, my site would constantly crash, was hacked more times than I could count, and then the worst happened, I lost everything. You see, the no-name hosting company didn’t exactly fulfill their end of the bargain. I was paying all these extras for security and site back-ups, but they completely dropped the ball. It took quite some time, but in the end, I was able to get my money back. And it changed the way I ran my site from then on out.
That was when the light switch turned on. I searched Pinterest and Google, asked others who ran their own sites who they were signed with for hosting. Every single answer came back to Blue Host.
Knowing how stressful my last interaction was, I made sure to call their toll-free number first. I wanted to speak with someone and get a feel for the company before shelling over the money again. The woman at the time was incredibly helpful. She and I discussed my concerns and she guided me through all the steps in case I wanted to sign up, without any pressure to do so.
I took a few days just to make sure I was ready to commit; when I did, I never looked back.
In all the years I’ve been using Blue Host, I’ve never had any downtime, except scheduled updates (that Blue Host makes you aware of via email). And although I admit, the wait time for customer service can get a little lengthy, I find it to be well worth the wait. They even had a chat feature on their website if the phone just isn’t for you.
I really wish that I had done this right out of the gate, but at the time, I didn’t realize there was “one-stop shopping” in regards to self-hosting and webpage management.
Blogging, for me, is place where I can put the figurative pen to paper. I’ve always enjoyed writing, even if my grammar slips up or I misspell a word from time to time.
It’s a connection.
Your community will find you. Blogging creates the bridge to reaching them.
If you’ve read this far, it’s obvious you need to start blogging as soon as possible. There’s no reason to feel intimidated by the money-makers, or the commercially popular blogs. The internet is large enough for everyone to find their niche and share their voice. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve changed the look, feel, or content to my website until I finally felt like it was ‘home’.
There’s really no need to wait, especially since you have me, and countless others to help walk you through the beginning steps.
Blue Host: A step by step guide.
First thing’s first. Simply click on “Get started now” to begin opening up your Blue Host account.
What I love about starting the process is that you can find your desired domain, which is included in Blue Host’s plans. Simply enter the name and it’ll tell you whether it’s available or not. If you aren’t sure of a name, you have the option to fill that out at a later time.
Want even more convenience? You can type in your domain below without leaving this page to see what names are available for purchase!
Once you fill out your information, you’ll then start getting into the nitty-gritty.
When I first began with Blue Host, I started with the most basic package. I had a lot of work ahead of me and was hesitant to go with a plan that was too big too soon. Luckily, if you find your blog’s growth to be fast and furious, Blue Host seemlessly helps you upgrade to the next plan that would suit your needs.
Now, you’ll see that the price can be intimidating when all is said and done, but PLEASE understand that this is for 36 months of service.
I personally wanted to show a picture of the “extras” that I have attached to my own website. I find the added protection to be more than worth their prices. SiteLock, for one, emails you once a week with a rundown of any and all spam, bot, and hacker threats that blogs can be vulnerable to. Site Backup Pro has been invaluable – especially after my first hosting horror story of losing close to five year’s worth of work. Once you are signed up for Blue Host, you’ll see that the icons for these extras are front and center for easy access. As for the domain privacy protection, I prefer that my personal information be kept, well, private.
Once your account is opened, you’ll see this page. Now, you can’t have a website without the actual workspace, now can you? That’s the wonderful thing about Blue Host – WordPress is one click away. There’s no need to go beyond your account to find everything you need to begin your site’s set up.
It’s a simple install, just fill out your domain name, choose a username and password, and then click to install.
Now that you’re set up, the fun begins!
What type of blog do you want? A Mom Blog? Food and Recipe oriented? Maybe you want a professional portfolio. There’s a theme for that. At first, I was happy to use free themes that were available to me through WordPress, but after a while, I wanted a little more. I bought my current theme. It has a standard look, but there are a few things I’d like to tweak down the line. I suggest browsing Creative Market, Pixel Me Designs, Restore 360, etc.
Blogging is in constant motion. New information is being put out every single day, and it can become incredibly overwhelming if you’re just starting out. Luckily, there’s a fountain of knowledge available all over the internet. If I narrowed down my absolute must-read books, I’d suggest:
I hope you enjoy jumping in to the world of blogging. You’ll find it more rewarding and exciting than you can ever imagine!
